Keep Kids Safe This Holiday Season

It seems that 2008 could be coined the “Year of the Recall” with the flurry of toy recalls that occurred this year which saw over 45 million toys recalled by the manufacturers for various warnings, from choking hazards to excessive lead.

New guidelines do not officially go into effect until February 2009, so there is still the danger of finding toys that will fail tests in just a few weeks being sold in stores around the country.

HealthyToys.org reports that there are many toys that remain on store shelves that will be illegal to sell by Feb. 2009.  This relatively new website seeks to inform the public of potential dangers and reports their own independent test of many popular toys. Bookmark this site and come back to check toys you have in your home and those you plan to purchase for family and friends. RoundTabletoys.com will be updating profiles of toys to contain the safety information of the toys reviewed by HealthyToys.org in an effort to help keep you informed as well.

Have a Happy Holiday Season!

Elf on the Shelf – A Christmas Tradition

The Holidays are coming….

Rather than start off the Christmas holiday season this year running all over creation trying to check off everything on your list, and counting down the days until it’s over and you can relax, start a new Holiday tradition sure to delight the whole family: Elf on the Shelf!

Elf on the Shelf
Elf on the Shelf

What is the story on this sensational product, so popular that Hollywood Celebrities such as Jennifer Garner have been seen buying one ?  It is the creation of Carol Aebersold, mother of three now grown children (and grandmother of two), needed to be able to explain how Santa “knows” everything.  She had kept a toy elf from her childhood amongst her Christmas decorations, and began the story that this elf “watches” and reports back to Santa on the children’s behavior. Carol tells the story best, on her website:

“…At our home the elf would arrive around the holidays, usually at Thanksgiving. His sole responsibility was to watch my children’s behavior and report it to “Santa” each night. The next morning after the children awoke, they discovered the elf had returned from the “North Pole” (with some parental assistance) and was hiding in a different place. My children would race each other out of bed to try and be the first to spy him in his new position.

Over the years the tradition was perfected and rules were even introduced. For example, to better preserve his mystique the children were not allowed to touch him; however, they were allowed to talk to him. For obvious reasons, he was not allowed to reply. Eventually, my children even gave him a name – officially adopting him into the family.

Unwittingly, the tradition provided an added benefit: it helped the children to better control themselves. All it took was a gentle reminder that the “elf was watching” for errant behavior to be modified….”

The tradition began in Carol’s home in the 1970’s, but she brought it to market in 2005 so that all of us may enjoy the wonder of watching our children keep an eye on the “Elf on the Shelf”. Last year the popularity exploded for this set due to a media storm surrounding the Elf.   It has been featured in magazines such as Southern LivingNBC Dallas Morning News, and DisneyFamily.com, to name a few.

In keeping with the popularity of registering toys online, you can register your Elf here and receive a special note from Santa Claus! Be sure you get yours in plenty of time to start a new tradition this year with your family! Elf on the Shelf is in stock and now shipping from Roundtabletoys.com!

What’s Hot for Christmas in Toys this year?

Now that 4th Quarter is here, everyone is asking, “What are some of the hot toys for this Holiday Season?” The answer: Anything under $20.

According to Bloomberg Reports, who interviewed toy giants Mattel and Hasbro, the majority of toys that these companies market will fall under the $20 mark, “…this holiday-shopping season as cash-strapped parents temper impulse purchases amid the U.S. economic slowdown…as people pay more for gasoline and food, while seeing the value of their homes decline and U.S. job losses mount.”

Some of the hottest toys on Byrne and Silver’s Most Wanted list for 2008 include:

  • Mattel’s Elmo Live
  • Laugh & Learn and Smart Bounce and Spin Pony
  • Hasbro’s Star Wars the Clone Wars Clone Trooper Voice Changer Helmet
  • Jakks Pacific Inc.’s Eye-Clops Night Vision Goggles
  • Girl Gourmet Cupcake Maker
  • Bakugan Battle Brawlers (see our previous blog post regarding this line)

From Bloomberg.com article:

Spin Master’s Bakugan “continues to be this season’s hottest sensation,” Johnson wrote today in a research note. The Bakugan Battle Brawlers are spheres with built-in magnets that become warrior action figures when put on metal Gate Cards. Byrne predicted Bakugan and Mattel’s Elmo Live, a red furry monster that waves his arms and sings, will be among the best- selling toys.”

Suggested retail on Bakugan Battle Brawlers start at $4.99 and go up. Our advice is to order early. Now isn’t too soon!
